Fishing Competitions

SUNDAY POINTSCORE COMPETITION

The Sunday Pointscore Competition is the Club's main competition. The fishing calendar is drawn up each year to generally provide, wherever possible, fishing on two Sundays per month between September and May. Mothers Day and Fathers day and the Christmas and New Year periods are avoided. All Central Zone and the Interclub tournaments are included in the Sunday pointscore competition.

The conduct of the competition is set out in the Club's Fishing Rules.

SUPPLEMENTARY POINTSCORE COMPETITION

The Supplementary Pointscore Competition is run from 1 September to midnight 31 May each year and includes every day during this period excluding only Sunday pointscore days.

The conduct of this Competition is set out in the Club's Fishing Rules.

CENTRAL ZONE TOURNAMENTS

Rules: click here

New South Wales Game Fishing Association is broken up into three specific zones each of which has a Chairman who represents his area on the NSW Executive.

The Southern Zone is composed of the Clubs south of Wollongong

The Northern Zone comprises of Clubs from Lake Macquarie to the Queensland border

The Central Zone encompasses Wollongong GFC, Port Hacking GFC, Botany Bay GFC, Sydney GFC, Lord Howe Island GFC, Central Coast GFC and our own Club, the Broken Bay GFC.

Each of these zones conducts their own annual Zonal competition with a yearly "Cock of the Walk" award going to the best area for both capture and tag & release results

The Central Zone Competition is currently run over five separate tournaments with each of the five member clubs conduct a tournament weekend during the course of each season.

Generally these Central Zone weekends are integrated with club tournaments although a specific format does apply:

  • On the Saturday visiting boats may fish out of their home port but must return to the host Club's port for weigh-in and submission of capture certificates.
  • An evening barbeque is provided by the host club and tournament registration of must be paid and the tournament register signed by at least two crew members from each competing boat.
  • Failure to register will result in the disqualification of any points scored in the Tournament
  • On the Sunday, boats may fish back to their home port for weigh-in at the end of the day.
  • The host Club is responsible for the radio skeds over both of these competition days, however, boats moving out of radio range may report on their local club sked if contact cannot be made with the tournament base.

With Central Zone weekends spread from late September (Wollongong GFC) to mid May (Port Hacking GFC) the variety of fish species and appropriate tackle classes varying immensely. The Wollongong tournament held in September focuses on small pelagic and mako sharks, Yellowfin and Albacore Tuna . The mid and late season Botany Bay, Broken Bay and Sydney tournaments target the warmer current species of blue, black and striped marlin and tiger sharks.

The great thing about this spread of fish and fishing is that all boats and crews need to develop their skills in all aspects of our sport with good early season points being available. All Central Zone Clubs are highly competitive in both capture and tag & release and angler, boat and Club trophies in each category are always hotly contested. Apart from the fishing however, the Saturday evening barbeques are a great place to catch up with old friends and make new ones from other boats and Clubs.

Broken Bay GFC has a proud history of success in Central Zone competition. Our success has been achieved by providing a strong contingent of boats and anglers throughout the season and this competitive urge ensures that our Club is usually well represented at the trophy presentation evening.

With significant variety of available Big Game Fishing tournaments in New South Wales, the annual Interclub is without peer in the minds of all Clubs and anglers within this State. The tournament was originally an annual competition between Sydney GFC and Newcastle & Port Stephens GFC between 1948 and 1962, and since 1962 became the NSW Interclub. The Tournament is basically the NSW game fishing State Championship and has grown to become the largest tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.

The tournament is hosted by the NSWGFA and Newcastle and Port Stephens GFC and is conducted out of Port Stephens over the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March each year (with a Ladies Day tournament on a selected week day). Upwards of 250 boats and 1000 anglers compete each year for the honour of representing themselves and their Clubs.

Club teams are comprised of five boats and Broken Bay, as one of the States larger clubs, fields four to five teams each year with strong representation and success in both capture and tag & release classes. Like all New South Wales GFA sanctioned tournaments, the Interclub carries separate point scores for capture and tag & release and within these two categories, daily and tournament trophies are awarded for angler, boat and team achievements.

Unlike many other tournaments, the Interclub trophies are just a "piece of wood" but with only two boats and two teams able to annually earn the award of Champion (for capture and tag & release respectively) the competition is intense and the winners can rightly claim to be the State Champions.

The Interclub is the most prestigious and competitive tournament within Australia and is the Club's most popular event. Many club boats stay for two weeks and fish the Interclub, Mid week and Ladies Day Tournaments providing seven days fishing at the prime of the season.

The Broken Bay Invitational Tournament is the next largest event on the calendar and is held in mid March, two weeks after the Interclub. Both of these events are considered the “must fish” tournaments as they are positioned at the peak of the Marlin and Tiger shark season.
